On March 31, 2025, Legal Advocates for Nature’s Defence (LAND) along with the Friends of the Attawapiskat River hosted a workshop in Timmins to share updates on our efforts to protect nature and Treaty rights and to connect with community needs and concerns. Our sincere thanks to the Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre for sharing their space with us and to everyone who attended online and in-person, so that we could be together.

Below is a compilation of the resources shared during the workshop.
- Our full slide deck is accessible here. Additional informational resources can be found on the second last slide.
- Legal information fact sheets about Indigenous rights, the proposed Ring of Fire, and Indigenous protected and conserved areas
- A new blog which we will continue to update – Regional Assessment for the Ring of Fire has begun: Here’s what you need to know)
- A short film featuring the voices of those who paddled the Attawapiskat River: We Are The River. If you are able, consider making a donation to help fund the Friends’ paddling trip down the Attawapiskat River! Following spring break-up, they hope to be back on the water.
TAKE ACTION
- Please SIGN and SHARE the Indigenous grassroots Protection Declaration calling for the protection of lands and waters at risk from the proposed Ring of Fire. Add your name to the Friends of the Attawapiskat River’s Protection Declaration and please share widely!
- We have drafted a template letter for any Indigenous community member who wishes to notify the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada of their interest to have a say in the Regional Assessment. You can send this letter requesting they keep in touch and provide meaningful engagement opportunities.
