Get to Know: Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas

By Kanisha Acharya-Patel, Staff Lawyer

Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) refer to Indigenous-led conservation initiatives where Indigenous governments have the primary role in protecting nature through Indigenous laws, governance and knowledge systems. Establishing IPCAs is a way to uphold your right to protect and conserve your lands and waters, and must be central to the Crown’s approach to mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss.

This fact sheet provides an overview of IPCAs, why they are important, and challenges and opportunities for establishing them. We encourage you to share this resource with your network!  Please reach out to us (info@naturesdefence.ca) if you have any questions.
