Tens of thousands of mining claims have been staked absent the consent of Indigenous communities in a region that is among the world’s last remaining peatlands (or muskeg). This vast ecosystem in Omushkego territory in Treaty 9 is critical for biodiversity protection and ensuring a stable climate, because of its enormous ability to store greenhouse gases, like carbon.
Indigenous grassroots organizers are now calling for our support in amplifying their message that this region, which mining companies have named ‘the Ring of Fire,’ be protected.
