New Legal Resources: How to Participate in Environmental Decision-Making

Jenna Brunt, Staff Lawyer

Government registries like the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) and the federal Impact Assessment Registry are key online platforms for accessing information on new proposals (projects, permits, regulations, etc.) and engaging in decisions that can impact nature’s protection, Indigenous rights, and the rights of the public.

These systems can be difficult to navigate, but they provide much-needed opportunities for you to have your say.

We have created the following step-by-step ‘How To’ Guides to make it easier to access these systems, stay informed about project proposals, and meaningfully participate in environmental decision-making.

1 – How to Register with the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO)

To track provincial project proposals, policies, and permits, and receive notifications about public comment opportunities.

2 – How to Search and Submit Comments on the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO)

To find, track and comment on notices and proposals (e.g. mineral exploration permits) posted during public comment periods.

3 – How to Subscribe to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Ontario Mineral Tracker

To receive email updates about new mining-related proposals, including mineral exploration activities and developments in the proposed Ring of Fire area.

4 – How to Subscribe to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) Registry

To receive project-specific updates, public comment opportunities, and funding opportunities for major projects in the federal impact assessment process.

5 – How to Search and Submit Comments on the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) Registry

To search for project proposals and submit comments during public comment periods as part of the federal impact assessment and decision-making processes.

You are welcome to use and adapt our template letters and supporting materials when preparing your submissions – these tools are here to support your participation at every stage of the process:
