On June 13, 2024, the federal environment Minister introduced Bill C-73, the Nature Accountability Bill.  Bill C-73 not only sparks hope for nature’s protection, but changes the course of environmental law, being the first ever proposed law in Canada aimed at safeguarding biodiversity. 

Today is LAND’s 1st birthday! We are reflecting on all we have accomplished this past year as the only environmental law non-profit in Northern Ontario taking legal action to protect nature and Indigenous rights. 

The recent adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (“UNDA”) provides a renewed opportunity to ensure Indigenous peoples’ right to conserve and protect the environment is upheld. This right emulates from Indigenous peoples’ unique relationship with land that is inseparable from their socio-legal, political and spiritual systems. Upholding a right to conserve and protect the environment is especially important if we are to safeguard the health and well-being of Indigenous communities, who are disproportionately impacted by environmental injustices and prevent further environmental racism.

The Ontario government is poised to approve a number of mineral exploration permits in an area known as the “Ring of Fire” that will directly impact the health and ability of future generations to exercise their Indigenous treaty rights, including rights to hunt, fish, and trap.
