Protecting nature and Indigenous sovereignty

Our campaigns reflect how we take action to protect the land, water, and Indigenous sovereignty.

As the only Northern Ontario–based environmental law non-profit providing free legal services to Indigenous communities, LAND stands with those on the frontlines of environmental, climate, and human rights injustices. Our work challenges us all to come together as advocates for change for a future rooted in justice and respect for the land.

Stop Bill 5

Support Indigenous grassroots legal action against Bill 5

In June 2025, the Ontario government passed Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, into law.

Despite sustained calls for its repeal from Indigenous leaders and civil society, Ontario continues to aggressively implement Bill 5, rapidly dismantling environmental safeguards and protections for the lands, waters, and animals that Indigenous Peoples have relied upon — and safeguarded — for millennia.

Together with our Indigenous clients  — LAND is seeking to intervene in a court challenge to have Bill 5 declared unconstitutional and therefore unlawful.

The Hudson-James Bay lowlands in Treaty 9 territory is a region of profound cultural and ecological significance, as one of the last refuges on the planet for intact peatlands, clean water and untouched boreal forest,

While the Indigenous grassroots of Treaty 9 have declared these lands and water protected on the basis of their Natural Laws, extractive mining projects, including the proposed Ring of Fire, continue to threaten this region.

Will you join the Indigenous grassroots in calling for its protection and demand the government uphold its climate and biodviersity targets?
