Extractive Colonialism: Impacts of the Ring of Fire to Indigenous Rights and Food Gathering in Treaty 9

LAND is pleased to be presenting at the 7th Canadian Association for Food Law and Policy conference taking place in Thunder Bay November 2-4, 2023, where scholars, practitioners, policymakers, students, community advocates and Indigenous knowledge keepers will come together to discuss the legal challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous, northern, rural and remote food systems, and the intersections between food systems and human rights, particularly the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

On Friday November 3, LAND’s Founder Kerrie Blaise together with Friends of the Attawapiskat River founder Michel Koostachin will share a talk titled “Extractive Colonialism: Impacts of the Ring of Fire to Indigenous Rights and Food Gathering in Treaty 9.” Together, they will provide an overview of the projects proposed in the Ring of Fire, the potential impacts to Indigenous and Treaty rights, including inherent rights to harvest and access lands, and opportunities for Indigenous-led protection efforts. The Friends will speak to the impact of broken promises and what it can do to Indigenous peoples and their lands, including impacts to the practice of traditional food harvesting, when promises of inclusion and consultation, and respect for natural laws are dismissed.
